It is common cause that Universal Access to Healthcare Services is desperately needed in throughout the world and in South Africa, as a basic human right. There are however major questions about the most effective and realistic way of achieving this.
The Democratic Alliance has proposals on achieving Universal Access and has vowed to fight the NHI Bill on various fronts.
Prof Alex van der Hever has also raised several valid concerns around the lack of fiscal space to implement National Health Insurance, calling it a “non-starter”.
Whatever the truth is, this is a major market disruptor and has the potential to either improve healthcare services in South Africa, or collapse the country itself. Only time will tell.
